A monograph delivered by Unitarian religious philosopher James Martineau (1805-1900) on the association between humanities notions of the divine, as gleaned through the heavens, and the scientific explanations afforded to the material world in the modern age; all done upon the focus of Halley's comet, visible in 1835 for the first time since 1759. Martineau seeks to persuade that the appearance of the comet may convey a deeper spiritual significance rather than being a mere curiosity of natural philosophy.
