The first edition of Jacobite sympathiser William King’s (1685-1763) scathing reply to Church of England clergyman and natural philosopher Edward Bentham’s (1707-1776) Letter to a Young Gentleman at Oxford (1749), a pamphlet that recalled members of the university to abide by their oaths of allegiance and abjuration following the Jacobite rising and public disturbances in the city during 1748.
