Title-page and terminal leaf foxed, ink ownership inscription to head of title, clipping of 'A song by Mr. Thomson, Author of the Seasons' pasted beneath dramatis personae, lightly browned throughout.
The first edition of Scottish poet and playwright James Thomson's (1700-1748) second heroic tragedy, following on from the success of Sophonisba (1730). The play premiered at Drury Lane in April of 1738, with Alexander Pope in attendance; it would run for nine nights but thereafter was not revived. Two of the stagings were performed by command of the prince and princess of Wales, this initial printing is dedicated to the latter.
