VARIANT TEMPLE OF DEATH

[POETICAL MISCELLANY]. A Collection of poems Written upon several occasions By several persons. With many Additions, Never before in Print.

London. Printed for Tho. Collins and John Ford...and Will. Cademan, 1673. Second edition.
8vo. [6], 128, 131-185pp, [1]. Recased in contemporary blind-ruled sheep, later gilt lettering to spine. New endpapers. Late eighteenth-century Porkington Library shelf label to FEP, early ink inscription of 'Ellen Owen' to head of title. Slightly rubbed to extremities, spine a trifle faded and creased.
An apparent variant issue (although indeed the only issue recorded by Case), with early female ownership, of the expanded second edition of the famous 'Temple of Death' poetical miscellany, first published in 1672. As with the first (and indeed most subsequent editions of this popular collection), this second edition opens with the Marquis of Normanby's 'Temple of Death', but also includes 31 additional pieces not previously present.

Given the setting of the poems and register in this issue appears identical to Wing C5178, one assumes that the pagination, partially corrected to [6], 128, 131-185pp, [1], was changed in the press from the generally encountered edition with pagination [6], 128, 131-183, 182-183pp, [1], whilst the remainder of the setting was left intact.

For the uncorrected issue ESTC locates only three copies in the UK (BL, Leeds, Oxford) and just eight further locations in North America.

Case, Poetical miscellanies, 124b, c/f ESTC R13357, Wing C5178.
