Apologia pro joanne gersonio Pro suprema Ecclesiae & Concilii generalis Auctoritate: atque independdentia Regiae Potestatis ab alio quam a solo Deo...
Lugduni Batavourm [i.e. Leiden].
Apud Paulum Moriaen, [1676]
First edition.
Quarto.
[28], 338pp, [2]. With a single full-page copper-plate engraving, depicting Gerson as a pilgrim (p.304). Later blind-ruled sprinkled calf. Lightly rubbed. Early authorial identification in manuscript ('Edm. Richerium') to title page, which is shaved to foot with loss to imprint, scattered spotting. Early book-label of Simon Patrick, later book-label (and withdrawn stamp) of the Cathedral Library, Ely, and recent bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst to FEP.
Bishop of Ely Simon Patrick's (1626- 1707) copy of French theologian Edmond Richer's (1559-1631) apologia for the life and thought of French theologian Jean Gerson, whose works Richer edited for publication in three volumes (Paris, 1606).
Although not featuring as a separate lot in the 1972 sale of part of the Ely Cathedral library, this was undoubtedly released onto the market at the same time as numerous others with Patrick's donation bookplate - which had been presented to the diocese after his death; several were present in the library of Robert Hayhurst, Lancashire chemist and bibliophile, before its recent dispersal.
