The memoirs of diplomat Sir William Temple (1628- 1699), first printed in 1691, relating to the Franco-Dutch War fought between an alliance including France, Sweden, and England against the Dutch Republic. During the conflict Temple served as the English ambassador to the Netherlands on behalf of Charles II, negotiating numerous treaties in The Hague.
