A fascinating sammelband of early eighteenth-century miscellaneous tracts and pamphlets; a particular highlight being Bishop of Cork, Peter Browne's (d. 1735) controversial work objecting to drinking healths to the dead. Browne considered that such invocations emulated the service of the eucharist and as such were sacrilegious. His opponents argued that he was disrespecting the memory of William III, to whom the toasts were dedicated, and by extension the Glorious Revolution of 1688 - leading to suggestions that Browne harboured Jacobite sympathies. His position was challenged by numerous pamphleteers, including fellow Church of Ireland clergymen - one such example being included here.
Also contained within is the sole edition of antiquary John Pointer's (bap. 1688, d. 1754) contribution to a lively debate regarding the interpretation of a newly discovered Roman pavement in Oxfordshire. Pointer presents his conclusions regarding the iconography of Bacchus imbedded within the pavement with scholarly zeal, keen to disregard the explanation offered by Thomas Hearne (bap. 1678, d. 1735) in 1712, who would subsequently, with a certain pettiness, dismiss the majority of Pointer's later publications.
Other works of note include the first edition of the first published work of horticulturalist John Laurence (1668-1732) The Clergy-Man's Recreation - a treatise predominantly concerned with the cultivation of fruit trees, drawn from the author's personal experience of taming his neglected garden whilst rector at Yelvertoft; and an English translation of Nicolas-Pierre-Henri de Montfaucon abbe de Villars' (1635-1673) popular occult work Le Comte Du Gabalis Ou Entretiens Sur Les Sciences Secretes (Paris, 1670) - a discussion of the central themes of Rosicrucian elemental spirits presented as a satirical dialogue between a Cabalist and a sceptic.
