An Edinburgh printing of the first translation into English of French historian Jean-Francois Marmontel's (1723-1799) allegorical novel Belisaire, a thinly veiled criticism of the reign of Louis XV that promotes religious tolerance, and as a result was censured by the Sorbonne. Further editions printed at London, Dublin, and Cork appeared in the same year, no priority has been established.
