Armorial bookplate of Walter Hawkins to recto of front blank fly-leaf, presentation plate, tipped-in to title page of first mentioned work, of the Royal United Service Institution recording the gift of the volume by Hawkins.

An eminently coherent and extensive sammelband of thirty mid-nineteenth century catalogues - all remarkably rare or entirely unrecorded - for the sale by auction of valuable cabinets of coins and medals; primarily dispersed at auction by Sotheby's, the preponderance priced in manuscript.

Highlights include the sale catalogues for:

- The Greek and Roman coin cabinet of East India Company merchant John Robert Steuart (1780-1848).

- A quantity of English and Roman coins, the property of the late Lord Mark Kerr (1776-1840) Royal Navy officer, veteran of the Napoleonic Wars.

- The extensive numismatic library of Jospeh Goodall (1760-1840), cleric and Provost of Eton, as well as the catalogue for the four-day sale of his cabinets of coins and medals, which sold for a total of £657.

- The coins and medals of lawyer and bibliophile William Bollard (1772-1840), dispersed over four days, across 661 lots, realising £1,194.

- A miscellaneous collection of gold, silver, and copper coins and medals belonging to the late George Robert Ainslie (1776-1839), British Army officer and numismatist, author of Anglo-French Coinage (1830).

- The coin collection of Sir Robert Abdy (1688-1748), dispersed at Sotheby's across five days in June, 1841, realising a total of £814.

The catalogues were once the property of Walter Hawkins (1787-1862), Ship and insurance broker, numismatist, and collector. In 1848, following his retirement, Hawkins devoted himself to the study of numismatics, and contributed numerous papers to archaeological and antiquarian journals.

Hawkins left his extensive coin collection to the Royal United Services Institute (to whom this sammelband was also bequeathed.) The collection, housed in the RUSI Museum at the Banqueting House, Whitehall, was dispersed in the 1960s when the government took possession of the premises. The fate of the collection is unknown.
