MENTIONED BY PEPYS

[BERNARD, PRINCE-BISHOP OF MUNSTER]. A Letter Sent by His Highness the Bishop & Prince of Munster to the Lords the States General of the United Netherlands.

Oxford. William Hall, 1665.
Quarto. [2], 13pp, [1]. Disbound. A trifle browned, first two leaves detached at lower gutter but sound.
An important political letter on violence and looting during the Second Anglo-Dutch War composed by Christoph Bernhard of Galen (1606-1678), the Catholic Prince-Bishop of Munster, to the States General of the United Netherlands. The letter denounces the Dutch army's violent methods employed in East Friesland and his own Principality of Munster during the conflict. These included torture (roasting by fire), and the seizing of cattle. This 'good letter' is mentioned in Samuel Pepys's diary, who read it not long after its publication.
