Offsetting to title, later gift inscription to head of FEP. Presentation copy, inked inscription 'Dall' Autore', in the hand of Mathias, to head of title. Annotation to foot of title, also in the hand of Mathias: 'Edizione non Divulgata'. With an A.L.S. pasted to FEP: 'My dear madam, I have printed privately a very few copies of the Tuscan Drama of Sappho in it's present form, & I hope you will gratify me by accepting one of them. I am, my dear madam, yours very sincerely Thos. J. Mathias. I hope to hear that Sir John Orde is perfectly recovered, to whom I ask to be kindly remebered. Middle Scotland Yard, Whitehall, May 25. 1811'.
A privately printed edition of an Italian translation, executed by English satirist and scholar, Thomas James Mathias (1753/4-1835), and first printed in 1809, of poet William Mason's (1725-1797) dramatic opera Sappho (1778).
