GRECIAN HISTORY VERSIFIED

JOHNSON, W. R.. The history of greece in easy verse; From the Earliest Period, to its Conquest by the romans.

London. Printed for B. Tabart, Juvenile Library, 1807. First edition.
12mo. [6], 129pp, [1]. With an engraved folding frontispiece. Original publisher's red roan-backed marbled paper boards, ruled and lettered in gilt. Extremities rubbed, loss to head of spine. Frontispiece foxed, single short tear to margin, else internally clean and crisp.
The first edition, in original state, of a succinct history of Ancient Greece in verse. The work, given its rather ambitious aim, is competently written and succeeds in conveying information in couplets without often resorting to awkward rhyme pairings typical of contemporary publications of this kind. The author, who somewhat optimistically writes with the purpose of his verse 'being committed to memory by young persons of both sexes', followed this effort with The History of Rome, in Easy Verse in 1808.
