An enlarged edition of an anthology of the first six poems to be awarded the prestigious annual University of Cambridge prize for poetry, the Chancellor's Gold Medal. The award was first presented in 1813 to George Waddington (1793-1869) of Trinity College, later to become a Church of England clergyman and ecclesiastical historian. Other notable recipients represented in this volume include William Whewell (1794-1866), noted mathematician and some time Master of Trinity College; and Chauncey Hare Townshend (1798-1868), respected poet and a friend of Charles Dickens (he was the dedicatee of Great Expectations).
