A greatly abridged edition of Dumas' perennially popular adventure novel The Count of Monte Cristo (Paris, 1844-46), edited by journalist William Thomas Stead (1849-1912); number two in the "Review of Review's" Masterpiece Library, Penny Popular Novels series (volume two). A 'sequel', comprising the remainder of the narrative and titled The Vengeance of Monte Christo was published by the company a fortnight later.
