The first edition of Algernon Charles Swinburne's (1837-1909) paean to the French Republic, dedicated to Victor Hugo. On 4th September 1870, following the surrender of Napoleon III to the King of Prussia, republican deputies at Paris proclaimed the end of the imperial dynasty and the foundation of the provisional government that was to become the Third Republic.
