Reflections upon polygamy, and the Encouragement given to that Practice in the Scriptures of the Old Testament. By Phileleutherus Dubliniensis.
London. Printed for J. Roberts, 1737. First edition.
8vo. , 188pp. With a half-title. Disbound. Near contemporary ownership inscription to head of soiled half-title, very occasional annotations to margins, lightly dust-soiled.
The first edition of Church of Ireland clergyman Patrick Delany's (1685/6-1768) analysis and attack upon the practice of polygamy. Through examination of both ancient and modern empires, Delany disproves the contention that the habit increases population more rapidly than monogamy; he demonstrates this with the support of demographic calculations provided by his lifelong friend, physician and natural philosopher Richard Helsham (1683-1738).
