Law is a Bottomless-Pit. Exemplify'd in the case of The Lord Strutt, John Bull, Nicholas Frog, and Lewis Baboon. Who spent all they had in a Law-Suit.
London. Printed for John Morphew, 1712. Fourth edition.
8vo. 24pp. Disbound, all edges red. Later paper shelf-label to head of dust-soiled title page.
The first in a series of pamphlets by physician and satirist John Arbuthnot (bap. 1667, d. 1735) burlesquing the purpose, expense, and futility of the War of Spanish Succession. The conflict is reduced to a lawsuit between Lewis Baboon (Louis XIV) and John Bull, the latter - a wealthy, well-meaning, but inconsistent gentleman - became a national symbol of England.
