London. Richard Bentley and Son, 1871. Second edition.
8vo. ix, [1], 364pp. With a half-title and an engraved portrait frontispiece. Original publisher's blind-stamped green cloth, lettered in gilt. Rubbed, spine sunned. Adhesive and ruled paper remnants to gutter of front blank fly-leaf, one leaf (preface) detached, occasional light spotting/browning. From the library of a relative of Ralph Vaughan Williams, inked ownership to front blank fly-leaf: 'Vaughan Williams / North Tidworth'. This is likely Ralph's uncle, Edward Fraser Vaughan Williams, rector at Tidworth from 1869.
A revised and expanded edition, with intriguing provenance, of James Edward Austen-Leigh's memoir of his aunt, Jane Austen. This edition includes additional letters, family papers, and biographical material not present in the first printing (1869), as well as fragments of unfinished and unpublished Austen manuscripts, namely a chapter deleted from Persuasion and extracts from Sanditon, Lady Susan, and The Watsons.
