Near contemporary inked inscriptions to versos of both FFEPs: 'Francis Clerke / 1815 / Given by the library belonging to the foundation / at the / Charter House, neat paper repair to upper corner of Vol. II title page, else internally clean and crisp.
A handsomely bound set of an early nineteenth-century edition of the complete dramatic works of Shakespeare, with 'a copious index to the remarkable passages and words' by librarian and antiquary Samuel Ayscough (1745-1804). Initially written to accompany the third volume of a 1790 edition of the plays, the index is actually the first concordance of Shakespeare's plays, for which publisher John Stockdale paid Ayscough 200 guineas.
