VICTORIAN MANUSCRIPT FAIRY DRAMA

[GRIMM, Brothers]. [CORNER, Julia]. Erles-dene "The sleeping beauty".

[s.i.]. [s.n.], [1882].
Quarto. Manuscript on paper. [65]ff, ruled, with text to rectos only. With [2]ff printed programme for the performance bound in at front. Contemporary black morocco, gilt, titled to upper board. Marbled endpapers, edges red. A handsome copy with only slight rubbing to extremities. Inscribed 'Edwardus R from Il Maestro, Signor Watson, in remembrance of the pleasant hours spent in the preparation and performance of "The Sleeping Beuaty".
A well produced manuscript script, with some directions, adapted (in parts) from Julia Corner's The sleeping beauty, a play for home acting and young performers (London, 1861), itself an interpretation of the Brothers Grimm's well known Sleeping Beauty fairy tale.

This play was performed at Erlesdene, near Altrincham, and the manuscript version does reveal that original adaptations were made for this staging to the final act. A terminal verse entitled 'Our valentine', in rhyming couplets and signed by nine characters, closes this manuscript, following the stage direction curtain; it is not obvious whether this was part of the dramatic adaptation or specific to this volume, which was presumably presented to an 'Edward R' involved in the work.
