The first edition of historian Stanley Lane-Poole's (1854-1931) official biography of diplomatist Stratford Canning, Viscount Stratford de Redcliffe (1786-1880). Canning is predominantly remembered for his service as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister-Plenipotentiary to the United States of America between 1820 and 1824, and longtime appointment as Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire.
