The hill o' dreams.
Dublin.
Sealy, Bryers and Walker, 1909.
First edition.
12mo.
32pp. Original publisher's brown cloth, lettered in gilt. Lightly rubbed, some marking to boards. Endpapers browned, contemporary inked initials to recto of FFEP, very occasional light spotting.
The first edition of minor English poet Helen Lanyon's (1882-1979) first published work. Biographical details for Lanyon are scant, despite the present selection being devoted entirely to the landscape and characters of Ireland, she was connected to the country only through marriage. The collection evokes the beauty of the Antrim Glens, and as such one of the included poems, 'At Easter', was selected by composer Sir Herbert Hamilton Harty (1879-1941) to be both set to music and for inclusion in his anthology Five Irish Poems (1938), which also contained 'The Fiddler of Dooney' by W. B. Yeats.
