8vo. xiii, [1], 501pp, [3]. With six maps, 24 sketches in the text, and a final leaf of publisher's advertisements. Original publisher's blind-stamped red cloth, lettered in gilt. LIghtly rubbed, spine sunned. Later armorial bookplate of the Baron's Raglan, bearing the name 'Cefntilla', to FEP, foxed.
The first edition in English of Adolf von edler von Hornthal Horsetzky's general history of European military campaigns from the French Revolutionary Wars, through the Crimean conflict, to the Graeco-turkish war of 1897. The book was first published at Vienna in 1894.

Following the death of Fitzroy James Henry Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan (1788-1855), commander of allied forces during the Crimean War, 1,623 of his friends, admirers, and comrades purchased the estate of Cefntilla Court in Monmouthshire Wales, presenting the home to Richard Somerset, 2nd Baron Raglan (1817-1884) and his heirs in perpetuity as a memorial in remembrance of his father's contribution to the British military.
