A monthly periodical, The Nautical Magazine was first published in 1832. As the century progressed, it documented the Crimean War and the First and Second Opium Wars, the construction of the Suez Canal, and ultimately futile search for Sir John Franklin's lost expedition in search of the North-West Passage.

This issue contains, inter alia, articles on; 'Durability of Wood', 'On the Present Neglect of the Deep-Sea and Hand-Leads', and 'On the Protection of Ships from Lightening'.
