BADCOCK, Lieut.-Col. Lovell. Rough leaves from a journal kept in spain and portugal.

London. Richard Bentley, 1835. First edition.
8vo. xi, 407pp. Contemporary continental gilt-tooled half-calf, tree-marbled boards. Rubbed and marked, with surface loss to edges and corners, joints rubbed, spine heavily sunned. Marbled endpapers, all edges yellow. Internally clean and crisp.
The first edition of the only published work of Sir Lovell Benjamin Badcock (1786-1861), English Major-General. One of the military reporters working under Lord William Russell between 1832 and 1834, Lovell was present at the siege of Oporto, and during the Miguelite war in Portugal. This volume was compiled, upon his return to England, from selected writings produced during this deployment; the journal contains not only his account of said military service, but also a great deal of descriptive writing recording the people, places and character of the region, including his own transcription of a local Portuguese ballad.
