The first edition of a descriptive catalogue, compiled by museum curator and art collector Sir John Charles Robinson (1824-1913), of the extensive decorative art collection of Toulouse-based advocate Jules Soulages, then being exhibited at the Museum of Ornamental Art at Marlborough House.
The collection, formed chiefly as the result of repeated tours through Italy between 1830 and 1840, was comprised principally of majolica ware, bronzes, and cinque-cento furniture. Originally located in Paris, and then for several years on display at Soulages' native Toulouse, the collection was purchased in 1856 by a cadre of wealthy subscribers, for the benefit of the 'progress of art in England', for a total of £11,000. The collection today resides in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
