The first edition in English of French military officer Jean, chevalier du Teil de Beaumont's (1738-1820) Manœuvers d'infanterie pour résister à la cavalerie et l'attaquer avec succès (1782), a martial manual providing instruction for infantrymen in countering cavalry charges. The work is preceded by a lengthy essay on the rise and progress of modern military tactics by the translator, Scottish military engineer and cartographer, John Macdonald (1759-1831).
