8vo. viii, 358pp, [2], 8pp adverts. Frontispiece, extra-engraved title and 13 hand-coloured plates by Henry Alken. A bright copy, with small repairs to hinges, with the webbing exposed but boards firmly attached to the text block. Bookplates of R.N.H. Moore Stevens and Robin Stephen Benson to front endpapers. Preserved in a cloth folding-box.
First published in serial format in Walter Spiers' New Sporting Magazine 1831-4, and in a full-length book format in 1838, R.S. Surtees' debut novel introduced the popular sporting cockney-grocer John Jorrocks, who also featured in later novels. This is the first edition with coloured plates by Alken, featuring text slightly edited by Surtees from the earlier appearances.
