The first edition of a manual intended to prevent infant mortality. The author states that one in every six children in England dies within their first year, he recommends that 'all children are intended to be brought up by the breast', and that 'it is an unnecessary practice to wash the head [of a newborn] with brandy'. Practical recommendations for the first year of the child's life cover subjects including suitable food, nursery ventilation and heating, teething, dress, and exercise.
