Charles McLeish the elder learnt his craft at the Edinburgh-based workshop of Andrew Grieve in Edinburgh. He later settled in London where he was employed first by Riviere before moving to the newly established Doves Bindery as the firm's finisher; a position he held for sixteen years until 1909, when he entered into partnership with his son, Charles McLeish the younger, who had apprenticed under Roger de Coverly.
