The first edition of the 'remains' of John Tweddell (1769-1799), classical scholar and traveller. Issued by Robert Tweddell, his brother, this collection addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding Tweddell's papers, possessions, and paintings, many of which had been damaged, lost, or disappeared during their transport to Thomas Bruce, Earl of Elgin. Robert Tweddell accused Elgin of appropriating them for his own means, and as such this volume, whilst partly a tribute to the late John, is substantially taken up with attacking Elgin. The dispute would finally be resolved in 1816, after years of searching for the lost drawings.
