An early edition of William Howitt's (1792-1879) semi-autobiographical sentimental appraisal of the amusements and pursuits of children in the English countryside. Among the distinctive features of the present work, and the equally influential The Rural Life of England (1838) and Visits to Remarkable Places (1840-42), is the vigorous promotion of popular tourism and engagement with English traditions and waning customs. First published in 1839, the book reached a fifth edition by 1863.
