Thomas Hughes' (1822-1896) immensely popular public school farce, first published in 1857, with a loosely inserted A.L.S. from the author, on Athenaeum Club stationery, dated 22nd October 1875: 'Dear Sir, I get on very slowly having only halfpromises from 3 men, Hutton, Forster, & Lockyer, which are dependent on my getting other four - I don't expect to succeed but will write again when more sure - ever yours Thos. Hughes'.
