Penny stone; or, a tradition of the spanish armada.
Fleetwood.
Printed for the author by W. Porter, 1845.
First edition.
8vo.
[4], 78pp. Original publisher’s textured brown cloth, printed paper lettering-piece to spine, marbled edges. Rubbed and spotted, spine sunned. Scattered foxing.
A rare, provincially published novella centred on the Flyde coast legend of the Penny Stone rock, and the hostelry that is reputed to have been there. At the head of the title page is the text 'Traditions of the foreland of the Flyde. Elizabethan era'; this would suggest a series, however we have been unable to trace other volumes in it. Another edition, printed at Preston, appeared in 1886.
