BANIM, [John]. Padhré na moulh, ou le mendiant des ruines, Roman Irlandaiae.

Paris. Charles Gosselin, 1829. First edition in French.
12mo. In two volumes. [4], 234; [4], 216pp. Contemporary half-calf, marbled boards, contrasting red morocco lettering-pieces, gilt. A trifle rubbed. Scattered foxing, FFEP of Vol. I detached.
The first edition in French of Irish novelist, poet, and playwright John Banim's (1798-1842) Peter of the Castle, originally published together in 1826 with The Boyne Water and The Nowlans, as the second series of his Tales from the O'Hara Family.

Although far less popular today than his successfully contemporaries, the works of Banim, and his brother Matthew, achieved significant commercial success during the late Regency period. Indeed, a contemporary reviewer in the Revue encyclopédique (1829) notes that the French public 'attend aujourd'hui un roman de Banim avec une impatience presque egale a cella qu'il manifesta a chaque annonce d'une traduction de Scott ou de Cooper'.

Uncommon; OCLC locates copies at only four libraries worldwide (BL, BNF, Brigham Young and Trinity College, Dublin).
