A revised and enlarged edition, printed in the year after the first, of merchant and philanthropist Jonas Hanway's (bap. 1712, d. 1786) second published work; a collection of letters documenting an excursion across southern England (including visits to Salisbury cathedral and Stonehenge), to which is appended an excoriating essay on tea, denouncing the beverage as the cause for numerous ailments. This latter piece led to a literary skirmish of ardent tea-drinkers including, notably, Samuel Johnson, who, in both the Literary Magazine and the Idler, criticised Hanway as a man whose sole delight is to find wrong in everything.
