London. James Nisbet and Co., 1854. First edition.
8vo. In two volumes. [4], xl, 342, [2]; vi, [2], 886pp. With a lithographed frontispiece to each volume, three engraved maps (one folding), an engraved plan of Jerusalem, and an engraved portrait of a 'Mohammedan family' reproduced from a daguerreotype. Original publisher's brown cloth, stamped in gilt and blind. A trifle rubbed, spines sunned. Armorial bookplates of Merthyr Guest to FEPs, scattered spotting.
The first edition of physician and Christian missionary John Adair Crawford's (d. 1879) detailed survey of the rise and progress missions to the East instigated by the Malta Protestant College.

Established in 1846 at St. Julian's, the college provided training for potential missionaries to Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Crawford, a founder of the institution, provides extensive accounts of the ecclesiastical history of Egypt and the Holy Land, notably focusing on the Muslim faith and associated customs.

The College was short-lived; it closed its doors in 1865 due in part to difficulties in recruiting foreign students and in motivating those who were secured to devote themselves to missionary work rather than receive a free education and simply return to their native country.
