THICKNESSE, Philip. Useful hints to those who make the tour of france, in a series of letters, written from that kingdom...

London. Printed for G. Kearsly, 1770. Second edition, corrected.
12mo. [4], 264pp.With a half-title. Contemporary calf, later rebacked and recornered. Heavily rubbed. Scattered foxing.
The revised edition of an entertaining and critical account of a tour through France by this eccentric author, and friend of Gainsborough, Philip Thicknesse (1719-1792). In 1766, Thicknesse published Observations on the Customs and Manners of the French Nation, much of which takes issue with Tobias Smollett's hostile account of France and the French in Travels through France and Italy (1766). The present work, first published in 1768, further capitalises of that journey and continues the attacks on Smollett.
