William Croft's major work, the publication of which completed only a year before his own death. As the composer notes in his preface, it was the first appearance of engraved English church music printed in score. Published by subscription, Musica Sacra consists entirely of his own select anthems but for a single verse of The Burial Service, still used in today's Anglican communion, 'composed by my predecessor, the famous Mr. Henry Purcell, to which, in justice to his memory, his name is applied; the Reason why I did not compose that Verse a-new...is obvious to every artist'.
