The second, strictly limited, edition of the book (first published in 1885) for which Henry Thornton Wharton (1846-1895) is best remembered, an admirable work on Sappho containing a life of the poet and a selection of translations of her verse. This copy, inscribed by the author, is marked as 'No. XXIII", or 23, of 25. Noted for restoring feminine pronouns to Sappho's verse, Wharton provided the first translation rendering the subject in the Ode to Aphrodite as undoubtedly female.
