Without fly- leaves, later inked ownership inscription of Sir H. Tempest and recent ink-stamp of Maynard Smith and Outram Library to FEP, early ownership inscription of E. Walker to title page, occasional early manuscript annotations, occasion marginal loss/dampstaining, text-block shaved at head, with loss to running-title and pagination numerals.
A revised and expanded edition of Bishop of Hereford and historian Francis Godwin's (1562-1633) most important work; a catalogue of English bishops and archbishops with succinct biographies establishing the episcopal succession.

The first edition was dedicated to Thomas Sackville, Lord Buckhurst, to whom Godwin was then chaplain. The second edition is dedicated to James II and contains numerous additions, including a discourse on the first conversion of Britain to Christianity. This expanded edition was translated into Latin in 1616 for the benefit of Continental readership as De praesulibus Angliae commentaries.

Provenance: Sir Henry Tempest, fourth Baronet Tempest (1753-1819), landowner, sometime Sheriff of Herefordshire.

Herbert Maynard Smith (1869-1949), Anglican clergyman and author on theological and historical subjects. J. Outram Smith (1871-1954), followed his brother into the clergy, concentrating on missionary work.
