A rare survival of a rousing patriotic ballad by Swedish poet Axel Daniel Leenberg (d. 1744) memorialising Swedish army intelligence officer Malcolm Sinclair (1690-1739).

Sinclair, born to a family of Scottish immigrants, was dispatched to Constantinople in 1738 to gather intelligence on the ongoing Austro-Russian-Turkish War and foster negotiations for a potential alliance between Sweden and the Ottoman Empire against Russia. On his return, having successfully carried out his duties, Sinclair was accosted by Russian infantrymen and assassinated. His death fuelled Russian resentment in Sweden and contributed to the outbreak of the Russo-Swedish war in 1741.
