HOGG, James. The queen's wake: a Legendary Poem.

Edinburgh. Printed by Andrew Balfour, 1813. First edition.
8vo. [8], 353pp, [1]. Contemporary dark green half-morocco, green buckram boards, ruled and lettered in gilt. Extremities rubbed. Early inked ownership inscription of W. M. Spalding to recto of FFEP, very occasional light spotting.
The first edition of the 'Ettrick Shepherd' James Hogg's (bap. 1770, d. 1835) first major critical and commercial success, the work which established his reputation as one of the leading poets of his generation and a formidable rival of contemporary fashionable poets including Scott and Byron. Presented in dialect throughout, the narrative poem imagines a poetical contest (the 'wake' of the title) held at Holyrood to celebrate the return of Mary Queen of Scots to Scotland after her long sojourn in France.
