Handsomely bound in contemporary vellum, spines richly gilt, contrasting black roan lettering-pieces. Extremities a trifle rubbed and discoloured. Marbled endpapers, recent book-labels of Peter Stewart Young and John Sparrow to front pastedowns, contemporary inked ownership inscriptions of J. Gill and later inscriptions of C. Parker to front blank fly-leaves.
The first complete edition (the first edition of 1756 was comprised of only two volumes) of physician and writer John Berkenhout's (1726-1791) translation of Swedish court official and statesman Carl Gustaf Tessin's (1695-1770) En gammal mans bref til en ung prints (Stockholm, 1753). In 1746, Tessin was appointed tutor to the future king Gustav III. This charming and witty series of letters, many in the form of fables, provide instruction on all manner of subjects necessary to form the young heir apparent into a model enlightenment prince.
