A tribute to American financier Joshua Bates (1788-1864) from a selection of Boston merchants, including both the record of an in-person assembly and a selection of letters penned in his memory. Bates, who founded the Boston Public Library in 1852, donated 30,000 volumes to the institution, with the main hall being named in his honour.
