A collection of fifteen sermons delivered before Parliament throughout the English Civil War, with contributions from prominent Church of England clergyman including ejected minister and religious controversialist Matthew Newcomen (d. 1669) and acclaimed preacher Obadiah Sedgwick (1599/1600-1658).
The traditional ritual invitation of preachers into Parliament at the beginning of sessions, for thanksgiving and blessing, was reinstated with the assent of Charles I, at the Long Parliament of 1640. Following the flight of the King from the capital and the outbreak of Civil War, these sermons became a tool for the puritan leaders, maintain unity against the common enemy and present a united front against the episcopal status quo and minimise internal ecclesiological differences. Their texts were swiftly translated into print and widely distributed.
