[14], 149, [3], 151-196pp, [4]. Later blind-tooled and panelled calf, titled in gilt to spine. Rubbed to extremities, joints, small chip at head of spine. Some some shaving of pagination/headlines and register/catchwords, browned and with some occasional ink-stains; tear without loss to B6 at head. With the bookplate of Fairfax of Cameron to FEP and an old Pickering and Chatto catalogue entry tipped in noting that this is Philip Bliss' copy, with his extensive manuscript notes to recto and verso of FFEP, and his usual ownership marks (the addition of a manuscript initial 'P.' before the printer's register B to leaf B1, followed by '44' indicating his year of acquisition).
Noted English antiquary and book collector Philip Bliss' (1787-1857) copy of the sole edition of ejected minister John Fairfax's (1623/4-1700) biography (and funeral sermon) of puritan divine - and fellow non-conformist - Owen Stockton (1630-80), later in the Fairfax of Cameron library (part of lot 378 in the original Sothebys sale of 1993).
Amongst the notes that Bliss has made in this copy are 'Leaves his library & founds a scholarship & fellowship at G. & Caius Coll. 63'; the text references his leaving 'the greatest part of his well furnished Library, even the choicest and most valuable of his Books to Gonvile and Caius Colledge in Cambridge'. The remainder of his works were sold at auction, alongside the libraries of George Lawson, George Fawler and Thomas Brooks, by Edward Millington in May 1681 (Catalogus librorum in bibliothecis selectissimis doctissimorum virorum.... London, 1681).
