The first edition of Church of England clergyman William Clerke's (1751-1818) pamphlet advocating the use of quarantine, improved cleanliness, and extensive lime whitewashing as a means of controlling the disease occasioned by an outbreak of fever amongst his parishioners at Lancashire. Clerke's suggestions were perhaps partly inspired by his own extensive involvement in the lime trade.
