The first of Restoration dramatist Thomas Otway's (1652 -1685) acclaimed blank verse tragedies, The Orphan: or, the Unhappy Marriage, which premiered at the Dorset Garden in 1680. The engraved frontispiece depicts English actress Ann Brunton Merry (1769-1808), under her stage name, 'Miss Brunton', in the role of the heroine Monimia - a significant role to achieve in her first year on stage. It is possible that the single 'T' lettered in gilt to the spine simply stands for 'Theatre'.
