The first edition of a rebuttal by Charles Stanhope, Third Earl of Stanhope (1753-1816) to Anglo-Irish philosopher and statesman Edmund Burke (1729-1797), concerning the latter's discourse on the French revolution. Burke had criticised the French Revolution for its disregard of traditional values and institutions; Stanhope presents a more hopeful review of the uprising, defending the values of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity, and upholding the ideal of the Republic against the Divine Right of Kings.
